De behandeling is afhankelijk van de ernst van de buiten het ziekenhuis opgelopen pneumonie (community acquired pneumonia). Deze wordt gebaseerd op het aantal criteria van de AMBU-65 score, waaraan de patiënt voldoet:

AMBU-65 score (per positief item wordt 1 punt toegekend):

- Ademfrequentie > 30 per minuut

- Mentale toestand: recente desorientatie in tijd, plaats of persoon

- Bloeddruk systolisch < 90 mmHg en/of diastolisch < 60 mmHg

- Ureum > 7 mmol/l

- Leeftijd > 65 jaar

0-1 punt - mild

2    punt - matig ernstig

3-5 punt -  ernstig
